APSF Committee on Scientific Evaluation
Sunny S. Lou, MD, PhD is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology at Washington University in St. Louis. After completing medical and graduate school at Stanford University, she completed residency and fellowship training in cardiothoracic anesthesiology at Washington University.
Lou’s research is focused on the use of clinical informatics and data science to improve clinician workflow, efficiency, and the quality of clinical care. She leverages electronic health record (EHR) audit log data to measure clinician workflow within the EHR, with the goal to identify strategies for optimizing clinician work, communication practices, cognitive burden, and burnout. Lou also studies the use of machine learning-driven clinical decision support tools to improve perioperative workflow, patient safety, and resource allocation. Her research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health, International Anesthesia Research Society, and American Medical Association.
